Each year, the Campaign for College Opportunity recognizes California Community Colleges and California State University campuses that are breaking barriers so more students can transfer and graduate with a degree. Today, while 64% of California college students attend a community college, only 19% of transfer-intending students do so after four years. For Latinx and Black students, the rates are just 16% and 13%, respectively. The Pathway Champions prove that these numbers can change and that, together, we can ensure more students achieve their college dreams.

California’s future depends on students being able to transfer and graduate. The Pathway Champions are uplifting students and strengthening California by creating seamless pathways to success. They are implementing placement reforms (AB 705 & 1705, Irwin) so more students succeed in transfer-level courses that count toward a degree, and strengthening the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) so students reach the CSU with junior standing and a clear path to a bachelor’s degree. Many of the Champions are also boldly addressing systemic barriers in transfer that block opportunity for historically underserved Black and Latinx students.
