The first step in the process is to submit an application for admissions. Prospective students may apply with a paper application. It costs nothing to apply, and there is no penalty if one does not wish to attend. If you are a returning student and have not attended classes for two or more semesters, then you must re-apply. The application form can be submitted with the LAHC rep in your high school college center, or at the Admissions and Records window in the Student Services & Admin. The Admissions office is open from 9:30 AM until 6:30 PM Monday through Thursday. During walk-in registration, the office is also open Friday from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. When you submit the admission application, the Admissions Assistant will then give you an appointment to register for classes. (Registration dates are also available through the telephone Student Telephone Enrollment Program, on line through the Student Information System site, and appear on the mailing label of schedules mailed to students’ homes.) The phone number for the Admissions/Records Office is (310) 233-4090.
Step Two - Assessment/Orientation .
The assessment and orientation will determine your placement in the Harbor College English and math sequences. Generally, courses taken in high school do not determine placement in the sequence, only previous courses taken in college would apply. It is recommended that all incoming students get assessed for math and English placement. For information or reservations, please call the Assessment Center at (310) 233-4072, the Welcome Center at (310) 233-4327, or you may select a date and time using the computers adjacent to the Information Desk.
Step Three- Counseling/Determine your class load.
The general counselors are available year round in the SSCADMIN, and are located by the Information Desk. There is 15 minute drop-in counseling available during the day, usually from 8:00 AM till 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday. To make an educational plan, a 30 minute appointment is needed, and you can call for an appointment at (310) 233-4230 or (310) 233-4220. In addition to creating an education plan, the counseling staff here at Harbor College will assist you in keeping on-track. This is so you can reach your personal or educational goal as quickly as possible. It is your responsibility to keep in contact with the counseling staff, and this may be different from your previous school experience. It is your responsibility to make and keep counseling appointments!
The next step in the process is to register for your classes. Ideally, by this time you will have completed the assessment, seen a counselor, and have looked carefully at the current class schedule. Registration for classes is done by three methods; by telephone, on-line, or in person. The telephone and on-line procedures are outlined below and give you the earliest registration opportunities. Look at the class schedule for the days and times that will work out best with your personal schedule, and remember that there are no up-front fees to register for classes. Fees should be paid as soon as possible after registration. Check with the Financial Aid Office for your eligibility for grants, etc.
Note: New student I.D. numbers have been assigned to all students, replacing the former social security number based system. Students who were enrolled in Fall 2005, Spring 2006 and Summer 2006 should have received a temporary I.D. card in the mail.
If you do not remember or do not know your new student ID number, please go to the Telephone (STEP) system by dialing (310) 605-0505 to retrieve your new student I.D. number by entering your social security number or former student I.D. number that begins with ‘000’ and 4 Digit Pin number. Alternatively, you can go to the college website at http://www.lahc.edu. Under the caption “Admissions” click on the “Registration Section” on the drop down menu. Click on “Add and drop classes online” and logon to the Student Information System to retrieve you new student I.D. number by entering your social security or former student I.D. number that begins with ‘000’ and 4 Digit Pin number. This is the same procedure for class registration, and you need your student I.D. number to register for classes.
Lack of financial resources should not keep you from getting a college education. That’s why Los Angeles Harbor College offers financial assistance to students who qualify. The federal government, the State of California and private donors contribute funds to make financial aid available in many form: Grants, Scholarships, Loans, Employment (Work-Study), Enrollment Fee Waiver. We encourage you to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This is what we use to determine your eligibility for financial aid, and the amount you may receive. Prior to applying online, visit www.pin.ed.gov to obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) so that you may electronically sign your FAFSA. If you are a dependent student, your parent(s) should also apply for a PIN. If you do not have a PIN, be sure to print and mail the signature page when you transmit your application. Paper FAFSA’s are available at our Financial Aid Office for those unable to file online. We encourage everyone to apply for financial aid to establish eligibility. Many students who think they would not be eligible find they can get a fee wavier or have eligibility for work-study or loans. The process is not difficult and should be done as early as possible. Applications become available in January prior to the beginning of the award year which extends from July 1 to June 30. It is always best to apply early. However, even if the semester has already begun, it is no too late. If you apply late, you must realize that if you are eligible for grant aid that it will be delayed, but a fee wavier can be done quickly if you are eligible.

This can be done either before or after submitting your financial aid information. The Cashier’s office is located in the SSC. The phone number there is (310) 233-4096. Before starting classes and to confirm your registration status in your classes, you must get a printout of the classes that you have enrolled in. Students receiving financial aid will have $11 deducted from their check if they do not pay in advance. After getting your printout, then make sure to get a student ID card. These are free and you will need one when classes begin.
