Developmental Education/Basic Skills, Developmental Education/Basic Skills - Through the orientation and assessment procedures, the college recognizes that students may not always have developed adequate basic learning skills necessary for success in their college studies. To aid students who can benefit from basic skills instruction, the college offers a number of classes that assist the students in developing proficiency in reading, writing, listening, mathematics, and in study skills and habits to help insure their success in college-level courses. The Learning Assistance Center provides self-paced programs that support the instructional programs. Through a variety of media (computers, audio, video) students may actively participate in different learning modules at their own pace. Programs are available in math, algebra, English, ESL, accounting, physics, drafting, foreign languages, study skills, and much more. A full catalog describes what is available for checkout at the LAC counter. PACE and ITV video programs are on file at the LAC and appointments are required to view the tapes. The Literacy Center (reading), writing and math labs, and group tutoring are available.
Open Access Computer Lab - The wide spread use of computers in all areas of life creates a growing need for computer literacy and computer services at Los Angeles Harbor College. The college currently has computer labs located in the Business area, Learning Assistance Center, Library (open access area). The Technology area, Nursing building, the Literacy Center, the Music building, Administration of Justice bungalow and the Job Placement and Training Center. The use of the computers at L.A. Harbor College is inter-disciplinary and not restricted to computer classes only. Computer equipment and software acquisitions are based on recommendations from the campus shared governance committee, ETC (Educational technology Committee) and follows the Educational Master Plan closely. Student use of computers and software is governed by campus computer use and internet rules. Students are asked to comply with the rules posted in the computer lab and observe "netiquette".
Note: Until the new "pay-for-print" system is installed in the computer labs and open access areas, students will be required to pay a material fee. Tutoring - Individual and group tutoring is available in most subjects in the Learning Assistance Center. The "Request for Tutoring" form may be obtained in the LAC at the check-in counter. It is helpful if students form their own groups (2 or 3) directly from the class in which tutoring assistance is being requested. Once a group is identified, and a convenient time can be matched with a tutor\'s schedule, tutoring can begin on an appointment basis. "Drop-in" tutoring may be available at various times in the Math lab and Writing lab (depending upon tutor\'s availability). Note: Students with declared majors and/or stated educational goals objectives will be given priority for tutoring. Laurie Roberts
