Counseling Services

Counselors can help you define your goals and plan how to reach them! Counselors are on duty throughout the year to help you plan your classes. We recommend that you see a counselor to do a Student Educational Plan (SEP), after completing your English and math assessment tests. Counselors can help you with academic, career, and personal issues that relate to college.

Drop-In Counseling

Counselors are available for quick questions on a drop in basis. Sign in at the Appointment Center computer station, and your name will appear on the counselor’s computer. Students are helped on a first-come, first-served basis. Listen for your name. The counselor will call you to the drop in area when it is your turn. Typical quick questions include clearing prerequisites, unit overloads, interpretation of the schedule, university requirements, nursing prerequisites, etc. You will be referred to an appointment for Student Educational Plans (SEP), graduation checks, readmission after dismissal, evaluation of transcripts for graduation, and university transfer. It is the students’ responsibility to provide unofficial transcripts for all counseling drop in contacts and appointments. All students should bring to the counselor their placement results, the orientation folder with inserts, any transcripts, and the student handbook. Use the folder provided to you at the Assessment and Orientation session to safely keep your Harbor College paperwork.

Prerequisite Challenge Procedures

A prerequisite challenge requires written documentation which explains alternative course work, background or abilities which have adequately prepared the student for the course. A Requisite Challenge Petition form, which is used to file a prerequisite challenge, can be obtained from the Mathematics Division Office in Technology Building, Room 123 and from the English Division Office in the same room.

Reasons for seeking a prerequisite challenge may include one or more of the following:

  1. A prerequisite is not reasonably available;

  2. The student has the documented knowledge or ability to succeed in the course without meeting the prerequisite;

  3. The student believes the prerequisite was established in violation of regulation or in violation of the district approved processes;

  4. The student believes the prerequisite is discriminatory or being applied in a discriminatory manner.

The prerequisite challenge must be completed two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which the student plans to enroll. Upon filing the prerequisite challenge, the student may enroll into the desired class if space is available. If this challenge is not upheld the student will be dropped from the class.

Note: Students must have official transcripts on file in the Admissions & Records Office for all prerequisites completed at other institutions.

Course Prerequisite Policy

Prerequisite means the preparation or previous course work considered necessary for success in the course. The college REQUIRES students to complete prerequisites as pre-enrollment preparation (See Prerequisite Challenge Procedures for conditions under which a prerequisite may not be required.) Prerequisites which are listed in the college catalog include:

  1. Courses for which specific prerequisites have been validated,
  2. Sequential course work in a degree-applicable program, and/or
  3. Sequential course work in certificate programs and,
  4. Courses in which a prerequisite is necessary for transfer to a four-year college or university.

Questions about prerequisites are best directed to a counselor prior to the first day of class.

Transfer Preparation

L.A. Harbor College prepares you for transfer to the following University systems:

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY (CSU)
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA (UC)
INDEPENDENT (PRIVATE) CALIFORNIA COLLEGES & UNIVERSITIES
Out-of-State colleges & universities

Over 60% of Harbor College’s students indicate transfer as their educational goal. You may know which university you’d like to attend after Harbor, and counselors can help you take the right classes to transfer to that university. If you are not sure which university you would like to attend, counselors will help you with that decision, and help you select classes that can transfer to a variety of universities.

California State University

There are 23 CSU campuses
Long Beach and Dominguez Hills are the closest campuses to Harbor
Minimum 60 transferable units with a 2.0 GPA.

The 23 campuses in the California State University (CSU) system are located all across our state. They accept a common general education pattern. The CSU general education pattern requires 39 units of general education spread out in five areas from Area A to Area E, plus the statutory requirement in United States history and government. Typically CSU campuses require 60 transferable units with a minimum 2.0 GPA, including the “golden 4,” plus preparation in the major. For more information see a counselor at the drop-in counter, or schedule an appointment at (310) 233-4230.

University of California

There are 10 UC campuses
UCLA & UC Irvine are the closest campuses to Harbor
Minimum of 60 UC transferable units with a cumulative 2.4 GPA. (for California residents)
Some UCs require a higher GPA and most require completion of preparation for the major.

Ten cities in California have University of California (UC) campuses. The UC campuses stress the need for students to have their freshman and sophomore preparation for the major completed before transfer. That means that students should decide on their majors, and begin lower division classes as soon as possible. For transfer students, the UC campuses have a common general education pattern known as the IGETC. IGETC should be totally completed prior to transfer. In most cases, UC campuses require 60 UC transferable units with a minimum 2.4 GPA, and preparation for the major. Please see a counselor to plan your classes, and for Honors Program options. For more information see a counselor at the Drop-In counter, or schedule an appointment at (310) 233-4230.

Independent (Private) Colleges and Universities

There are about 75 independent California colleges and universities
USC and Loyola Marymount are the closest independent campuses to Harbor
Some of these colleges and universities accept CSU or IGETC patterns

Private or independent colleges and universities set their own admission and general education transfer requirements. Students should research their top university choices to ensure a smooth transition. Harbor College has articulation agreements with most private California universities. For more information see a counselor at the Drop-In counter, or schedule an appointment at (310) 233-4230.
