Regional Strategizing Forums
The L.A. College Consortium convened 4 Regional Strategizing Forums throughout the Grant period. Participants included staffing from all L.A. County Mental Health Services areas, community mental health entities, NAMI, Active Minds, administrative and counseling staff from all consortium colleges and the West L.A. and Rio Hondo Campus Based Grant Project Staff. Additionally, professional staff from the Cal State Dominquez Campus Based Grant Project attended the first Regional Strategizing Forum. There was an established planning agenda for each forum. Details follow:

Planning Process
1. Meet the California Community College Student Mental Health Program Goals:

        Implement and sustain Prevention and Intervention strategies that will allow campuses to address the mental health needs of the overall student population in general and student veterans in particular.

        Promote a sustainable collaborative infrastructure between campuses and local mental health services systems.

2. Provide ongoing collaboration between Los Angeles Community Colleges and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health service area representatives to identify mental health service gaps and identify potential solutions to problems.

3. Conduct four CalMHSA Campus Based Grant Regional Strategizing Forums during 2012 – 2014 with representatives from local Campus Based Grant Colleges/Universities, community Mental Health Partners, and representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health service areas and administrative offices:

Regional Strategizing Forum # 1:

Title: Partners in Shifting the Paradigm, Part 1: Proven Practices of Collective Impart Responding to Community College Mental Health Needs: An Institutional Crisis

Date: May 30, 2013

Location: California State University, Dominguez Hills

Goals:
  • Increase dialogue and foster relationships between the colleges and community mental health partners

  • Share information on college student mental health needs, models, and strategies with campuses which share geographic proximity

  • Address issues concerning the mental health needs of the overall student population, with focus on high-risk student populations, such as student veterans, minorities, LGBTQ, and other underserved segments of the student population

  • Address the complexities of the regional mental health service gaps, and develop priorities, resolutions and strategies to alleviate these gaps

  • Outcomes:

  • Improved understanding of college/university student mental health needs with identification of service delivery gaps.
  • Attendees:    

  • Cal State Dominguez Campus Based Grant representatives, CalMHSA L.A. College Consortium representatives, Rio Hondo College Campus Based Grant  representatives, and West Los Angeles College representatives, community mental Health partners and representatives from Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health services areas and administrative offices.

    Regional Strategizing Forum # 2:

    Title: Partners in Shifting the Paradigm, Part 2 Embracing Community College Student Mental Health Needs: A Prevention, Early Intervention, & Recovery-Based Response

    Date: June 14, 2013

    Location: West Los Angeles College

    Goals:
  • Increase dialogue and foster relationships between L.A. County Department of Mental Health, community mental health partners and the colleges

  • Share information on client and student mental health needs, models, and strategies with campuses which share geographic proximity

  • Address issues concerning the mental health needs of the overall client and student population, with focus on high-risk populations, such as veterans, minorities, LGBTQ, and other underserved segments of the student population

  • Address the complexities of the regional mental health gaps in services, and develop priorities, resolutions and strategies to alleviate these gaps

  • Outcomes:

  • Improved understanding of LACDMH resources and needs with identification of service delivery gaps through formal presentations and breakouts. Specific needs identified relative to geographic areas. LACDMH and college pledge to partner to alleviate the service gaps through a collaborative planning effort.

    Regional Strategizing Forum # 3:

    Title: Embracing Community College Student Mental Health Needs: A Prevention, Early Intervention, and Recovery Based Action Planning Event

    December 13, 2013

    Location: Los Angeles Trade Technical College

    Goals:
  • Continue to increase dialogue and foster relationships between the colleges and community mental health partners

  • Share resource information which supports wellness and academic success of consumers and students

  • Develop preliminary stage of a Strategic Action Plan which addresses the mental health needs of the overall student population with a focus on high-risk student populations, such as veterans, minorities, LGBTQ, and other under-served segments of the student population

  • Develop resolutions and strategies for inclusion in the Strategic Action Plan which address the complexities of regional mental health service gaps

  • Outcomes:

  • Preliminary stages of strategic action planning completed through unanimous consensus vote of the needed planning items/strategies which should be integrated into the Preliminary Strategic Action Plan. Agreement reached to disseminate the Strategic Action Plan for review and feedback by all participants prior to the final Regional Strategizing Forum on March 27, 2014.

    Regional Strategizing Forum # 4:

    Title: Embracing Community College Student Mental Health Needs: An MHSA Prevention, Early Intervention, and Recovery Based Action Planning Event

    Date: March 27, 2014

    Location: Los Angeles Trade Technical College

    Goals:
  • Continue to increase dialogue and foster relationships between the colleges and community mental health partners

  • Share resource information which supports wellness and academic success of consumers and students

  • Review Preliminary Strategic Action Plan which addresses the mental health needs of the overall student population with a focus on high-risk student populations, such as veterans, minorities, LGBTQ, and other under-served segments of the student population

  • Adopt Preliminary Strategic Action Plan which addresses the complexities of regional mental health service gaps

  • Present Recognition Awards
  • Outcomes:

  • Adoption of Preliminary Strategic Action Plan between Los Angeles Colleges and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health.

    Formal recognition of planning process representatives and presentation of awards for exemplary performance.
