Notes,
Harbor College Academic Senate
Special Meeting,
2:00, Thursday, August 11, 2005
LRC 125
OPENING PROCEDURES
Absence of quorum
Though the following agenda items were discussed, the meeting was not formally called to order and no actions were taken, the required quorum of Senate members at no point being present.
Administrative Report
Ms. Carson updated those present on construction progress and
fall enrollment. Nine-week classes will be scheduled to cover for initial
fall attrition. Dr. Spink elaborated on enrollment concerns.
ASO Report
Luis Garcia was introduced as the new ASO president and alterted the Senate to “Constitution Day” activities and urged instructors to promote ASO Senate recruitment.
PUBLIC COMMENT
First-Year Experience
Ms. Fasteau reported on the planning for a “first-year experience” orientation event for students August 22 and donations were offered to cover expenses.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Flex
Ms. Carrillo reported that the committee had been unable to reconvene since last year’s report deadline in June, and that as a consequence the reports have not yet been processed. She is hoping that the submission deadline can be moved up (for example, to April 21) so committee members will still be on campus to process reports through the end of the semester.
CONSENT ITEMS
Accreditation Deadlines
In the absense of a quorum, no action can be taken in any case, but Mr. Wood mentioned that the Board of Trustees may not be acting on our report until its December meeting.
PROPOSED MOTION
Reactivation of Vocational Education Committee
In that the Senate Constitution does not specifically provide for this committee, reactivating it will require Senate action. Ms. McMurray suggested that those currently receiving funds should constitute the committee, which would recommend policies and procedures for making VTEA decisions. The need to survey future needs for VTEA programs and the roles of the Transfer and Career Centers in this connection were also emphasized. Ms. McMurray suggested that the matter be referred to APPC, which should develop an appropriate proposal. It was also suggested that the broader concerns here relate to enrollment management, and the need for reactivating an enrollment management committee was discussed at some length, perhaps as a joint subcommittee of the academic and student services cluster committees. Immediate problems with the assessment process were stressed.
