OPENING PROCEDURES

Culinary Arts Program and Title V Grant Proposal

Beginning in the absence of a quorum, and continuing once a quorum had been attained, Mr. McNeel summarized the proposals submitted to the Academic Affairs Committe yesterday and distributed to the Senate at this meeting.  He then responded to several inquiries, highlighting the Title V grant focus on ground-breaking approaches to on-line instruction and “hybrid” offerings.

            Approval of Agenda

Unanimous consent to approve the agenda with the adjustments shown herein.

            Treasurer’s Report

Mr. Glover reported that the balance in our account is $1899.

            Approval of Minutes

Unanimous consent to approve the minutes of March 3 with typographical corrections.

Unanimous consent to schedule a one-agenda-item special Senate meeting for 1:00 p.m. April 14 to confirm nominations for Senate elections.

            Administrative Report

Mr. Rosas briefed the Senate on current enrollment implications and predicted that we will probably be slightly better off under the new formula allocations than before, although we are down 1% more than the district average this spring, so our summer offerings will be increased accordingly.

            ASO Report

Ms. Stanojevik reported that “pi-day” was a great success and that ASO elections campaigning will begin April 4.  The ASO Senate opposed the proposed change in general education requirements.  Mr. Stimmler commented on this as well and introduced the idea of a student essay contest on “what Harbor college has meant to me” with a deadline of May 9.  Ms. Melendez also added comments of her own.

            Consent Item

Resolved, That the Academic Senate of Harbor College endorses June Smith and/or Wendy Hollis if either or both decide to become candidates for the ASCCC Executive Committee at the Spring, 2005, Plenary Session.

          Adopted without objection.

ITEMS/MOTIONS NOTICED FOR ACTION MARCH 2

            Sociology 001

The offering as adopted by the Curriculum Committee was unanimously approved.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

          Signature Collectors

Ms. McMurray alerted the Senate to possible misrepresentations of the contents of initiatives which on-campus paid signature gatherers are allegedly making to students.  She also requested input on how to assess representative campus-wide sentiment on proposed changes in the general education requirements.

COMMENTS ON DISTRIBUTED REPORTS/NOTICES/COMMITTEE

MINUTES

            Curriculum

Ms. Fasteau, on behalf of the committee, noticed the following Curriculum Committee approvals for action at the Senate’s April 7 meeting:

Biology 101 (Biodiversity and Environmental Biology), 5 units; new course in series of 3

Child Development 44 (Programs for Children with Special Needs I), 3 units, new course

Speech 190 (Radio and T.V. Production), 3 units, reinstatement of college course

            Accreditation

Mr. Wood drew the Senate’s attention to the accreditation timeline in the Senate meeting packet and his written committee report.  Dr. Tomlinson then briefed the Senate on related program review data, introducing Len Isaksen to distribute and discuss a summary of the “Six Year Trend Study”on enrollment and demographic characteristics for Harbor College which he has completed under Dr. Tomlinson’s direction.  Now that the data has been made available this way, it should greatly facilitate its actual use throughout the program review process.  Mr. Isaksen also alerted the senate to several anomolies in the data.

ADJOURNMENT

In the absence of a quorum, the meeting was adjourned.
