OPENING PROCEDURES

            Approval of Agenda

          Unanimous consent to approve the agenda with the adjustments shown below.

            Approval of Minutes

          Unanimous consent to approve the minutes of February 17 with specified corrections.

            Administrative Report

          Dr. Spink reported that Ken Pruitt will be leaving as Pinnacle One project director here and expressed her appreciation for his fine service.

            ASO Report

          Ms. Garcia introduced the new ASO secretary and reported that

the ASO senate is considering math and English requirements and preparing for the ASO elections in two weeks.

            Consent Item

          Ms. McMurray reminded the Senate that elections are to take place six weeks prior to the end of the semester, and the Senate concurred in scheduling Senate elections for the week of April 25-29.  Ms. Keller, Ms. Campbell, Ms. Watkins, and Mr. Barakat will comprise the Elections Committee.  Ballots are to be issued on or before April 14, and the committee will issue the call for nominations and arrange the elections process.

 

ITEMS/MOTIONS NOTICED FOR ACTION MARCH 2

          Class Cancellations

          MSU (Hollis/Glover) to adopt the motion noticed with two changes, to provide:

            Resolved:  That, due to the necessity of maximizing enrollment growth while balancing our budget, and given the relative costs of and income from classes having 15 or more students, no class shall be cancelled prior to its first meeting.

          It was the sense of the Senate that a written policy is required to assure the implementation of this motion, and that Mr. Young, Mr. Stanbery, and Mr. Wood will confer with Ms. Carson in so doing, with the resulting proposal to be referred to APPC.

            Sociology 001

          Deferred to the next meeting.

 

COMMENTS ON DISTRIBUTED REPORTS/NOTICES/COMMITTEE

MINUTES

            Flex

          It was announced that flex credit cannot be given for specific accreditation activities, although projects that are broader in function can qualify as staff development activities.

            Accreditation

          The Implementation Team is meeting regularly.  New co-chairs have been confirmed for eleven focus areas in the next phase of the self-study process.

            Facilities

          The next meeting will focus on parking.  Senators were reminded of the April emergency drill schedule.

            Prop A/AA

          Several divisions will be displaced in the initial moves taking place over the summer.  There will be a campus-wide forum on current plans this coming Tuesday.

            Staff Development

          Funds are running short, but a few projects have been funded.  Classified staff are having two days of staff development activities over semester break.  A new staff handbook will be issued in coming months.

            District Curriculum Committee

          Revised graduation general education requirements for the AA degree were approved adding Dance and Martial Arts to the activities that can mee the physical education requirement.

          DAS

          The next meeting is at Pierce.  The State Academic Senate Area C meeting is the Saturday before spring break (March 19).  The spring plenary session is in Sacramento beginning April 9.

          President’s Report

          Harbor is preparing a Title V grant in a collaborative with WLAC.  We are not eligible to renew ours, but we can participate with another campus as a partner.  On-line instructional development will be a big part of the grant, and it is for Hispanic-serving institutions.  We will complete the core for the Business major in online format.
