LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE RECEIVES $1.5 MILLION GRANT TO ASSIST “AT RISK” STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Daily Breeze article 8/20/2010

Wilmington, CA – August 20, 2010 - Los Angeles Harbor College has been awarded a U. S. Department of Education Student Support Services Grant (Academic Success Action Plan – Project A.S.A.P.) for a total of $1.5 million dollars over the next five years to address the special learning needs of students with disabilities.

Project A.S.A.P. has been designed to improve the retention, graduation, and transfer rates of students with disabilities at Los Angeles Harbor College.  A top priority of the Project is to ensure that eligible students have greater access to full financial aid at all college levels.  The Project’s proposed activities will increase student proficiency levels in financial literacy, reading, writing, computer literacy, and math in support of improved student academic success.

Project A.S.A.P. will address the learning challenges of students with disabilities through the provision of critical student support services such as rehabilitation counseling, comprehensive individual and group tutoring plans, supplemental basic skills instruction (math, English, writing, spelling and computer literacy), supplemental direct aide assistance, expanded services for ESL students and other special needs populations, and activities which promote cultural awareness and college club involvement.

For more information about this grant, please contact Dr. Deborah Tull, Director of Special Programs and Services, at 310-233-4629.
