President's Message
A Message From Dr. Linda M. Spink, President, Los Angeles Harbor College
Welcome to the web site of Los Angeles Harbor College, a comprehensive two-year public community college providing opportunity for transfer education, occupational training and life-long learning. We are proud of being the college of choice for Harbor area residents for more than 50 years. The excellence of our faculty, staff and programs are well known because of the excellent teaching and personalized attention we provide to those who come to us seeking to improve their knowledge and skills.
This is truly an exciting time for Harbor College. The passage of the Proposition A and AA bond issues by the voters of Los Angeles has provided the college with funding to construct new buildings, modernize others and make many needed improvements worthy of a first-class college. There are projects in various stages of progress all over the campus, and that will be the case until 2009. When the planned changes are completed, we will have a state-of-the-art new campus ready to support our students and faculty in well into the 21st century. Updates on our new facilities master plan and Proposition A/AA progress are available on this website.
The college is known for its excellent faculty and transfer programs, as well as programs responding to community and business needs. Partnerships have resulted in major grants for homeland security programs, training for the Los Angeles World Airport, the Port of Los Angeles and refineries, as well as our up-dated cable television studio (HCTV). Community residents can watch our expanded television coverage on Comcast Channel 27.
In our on-going efforts to meet the diverse needs of students, we offer the popular PACE program for working adults -- which Harbor College initiated in the Western United States -- plus shortened semesters, short-tem classes, on-line classes and many other alternatives to the traditional academic calendar. Additionally, we offer many support programs to assist our varied and diverse student population.
We also have many unique programs designed to reach out to the youth of our community, such as the F.I.R.E. Academy in partnership with the Los Angeles Fire Department which trains high school students in fire-fighting techniques, our theater Out-reach program, and our “Build-Your-Own-Computer” initiative.
Harbor College is here to help you meet your educational goals.
We invite you to explore this web site, which contains a wealth of information about all aspects of Los Angeles Harbor College. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or comments about Harbor College or our web site.
