lumumba teachers visit harbor college

Dr Spink with students from ZanzibarDr Spink with teachers from Lumumba School in Zanzibar

Harbor College celebrates its participation in global exchanges. For 17 years, Theatre Art's Professor, Larry Heimgartner, has provided students with a global learning experience taking them to other local campuses, as well as high schools, colleges and universities in the US and around the world.

In January, students from Harbor College and Cornwall College, in southwest England, gathered at Florida State's International Studies Center in London and prepared material for presentation at Lumumba School in Zanzibar, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania in southeast Africa. The delegation included staff and students in theatre arts, world development and media and their journey took them from London to Paris, on to Nairobi, Kenya, then, on to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and, then, on to Zanzibar. For 16 days, the group worked with teachers and students from Lumumba School as well as the Minister of Education. Larry Heimgartner's plays, Are You Positive, which deals with the AID'S pandemic, and Our World V, which speaks to environmental impact and global footprint, were presented to many schools throughout Zanzibar and were so well received that the Minister of Education gave a grant to Lumumba School so that they may be translated into Swahili and further tour to the more remote villages on the island.

In the spirit of the exchange, plans were developed to bring Lumumba School's Head Master, Hassan Tawakal, and three teachers, Shuwena Haji, Muhaymina Omar and Maryam Yussuf to visit Cornwall College and Harbor College this past month.
