Creating Electronic Reading Lists

Creating Electronic Reading Lists Using Library Databases:

Linking Off-campus Students to Quality, Copyrighted Information

or

http://ezproxy.lahc.edu:2048/login?url= + persistent URL = persistent & accessible URL

This page provides the necessary information to create direct URL links to full-text information in the subscription databases provided by Los Angeles Harbor College Library. These instructions may be used to create digital reading lists in course management systems such as Blackboard and Etudes or on any course or department web page. For more information or for help with these directions, please call x4471 or email locascmp@lahc.edu.

Prior Knowledge Required

The ability to locate relevant information in the Harbor College Library databases;
The ability to create a basic webpage;
The ability to copy-and-paste without using a mouse.

See the bottom of the page for basic instructions.

General Information

Persistent URLs are direct links to full-text information in library subscription databases that can be cut-and-pasted into course web pages or Course Management Systems such as Etudes or Blackboard.These persistent URL links are found in different places in databases owned by different companies. The main purpose of this instruction sheet is to demonstrate where they can be found for each databaseprovider.

Procedure

Due to copyright and licensing restrictions, links to subscription databases are solely for the use of Harbor College students and employees. For this reason, any electronic reading list created using library databases will prompt users, while off-campus, to authenticate themselves by entering a username and password. The authentication process tricks the database into thinking that access is coming from on-campus by first routing the internet connection through a proxyserver located on-campus. (All on-campus computers have unrestricted access.)

Any persistent URL, accessible through this authentication process must, therefore, be enhanced, by adding, as a prefix, the prefix URL for all the Harbor College Library databases to the persistent URL for the information desired. The Harbor College Library databases prefix URL, which must always be added regardless of database, is http://ezproxy.lahc.edu:2048/login?url=
The formula used to create a persistent and accessible link looks like:
http://ezproxy.lahc.edu:2048/login?url= + persistent URL = persistent and accessible URL
An accessible and persistent URL may, therefore, look something like this:
http://ezproxy.lahc.edu:2048/login?url= http://web.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail?vid=1&hid=4&sid=
4fc6000d-fe5a-460b-a315-a873467b3132%40sessionmgr8

Caveat

The persistent URL links are stable, but are subject to change or withdrawal. For this reason it is wise to verify article links from time to time.
