Prior Knowledge Required The ability to locate relevant information in the Harbor College Library databases; See the bottom of the page for basic instructions. General Information
Persistent URLs are direct links to full-text information in library subscription databases that can be cut-and-pasted into course web pages or Course Management Systems such as Etudes or Blackboard. These persistent URL links are found in different places in databases owned by different companies. The main purpose of this instruction sheet is to demonstrate where they can be found for each databaseprovider.
Procedure
Due to copyright and licensing restrictions, links to subscription databases are solely for the use of Harbor College students and employees. For this reason, any electronic reading list created using library databases will prompt users, while off-campus, to authenticate themselves by entering a username and password. The authentication process tricks the database into thinking that access is coming from on-campus by first routing the internet connection through a proxyserver located on-campus. (All on-campus computers have unrestricted access.) Any persistent URL, accessible through this authentication process must, therefore, be enhanced, by adding, as a prefix, the prefix URL for all the Harbor College Library databases to the persistent URL for the information desired. The Harbor College Library databases prefix URL, which must always be added regardless of database, is http://ezproxy.lahc.edu:2048/login?url= Caveat The persistent URL links are stable, but are subject to change or withdrawal. For this reason it is wise to verify article links from time to time.
