What is the Job Placement and Training Services Center?

 

The Center maintains job listings from local employers and updates the listings on a daily basis to help students and local residents find employment. Other services available at the Center include referrals, job preparation, job search, and college credit for work experience. It is not necessary to be a registered student at Harbor College to use many of the services, including job listings, at the Center. The Center offers Internet access via 20 networked computers.

These services are an integral part of the Harbor Career Network for the City of Los Angeles, through which Harbor College serves local communities, including Wilmington, San Pedro, Harbor City and adjacent areas in partnership with the Wilmington JayCees and other organizations and agencies. The Center is also a satellite for several one-stop career centers, including the City of Los Angeles, the cities of Carson, Lomita and Torrance, and the Carson/Lomita/Torrance Private Industry Council.

Where is the Center Located?

The Center is housed in room 121 of the Technology building, commonly referred to as Tech 121.

What services are available at the Center?
  • Job Listings from MonsterTrak and from local employers who register their jobs with the Center - anyone may register with their name and ID to receive three listings of their choice. Applicants may use this service as often as necessary.
  • Screening for Immediate Job Openings. The Center screens applicants to provide precisely the candidates sought by businesses and agencies as a service to local industry. Interview Space and Recruitment Opportunities- space, facilities, and equipment such as VCR’s for playing recruitment videos are available by appointment to businesses and agencies who want to interview applicant on campus.
  • Job Fairs are conducted twice each year for students and local residents, in the fall and early spring. Harbor College Job Fairs generally feature representation by more than 35 local employers seeking workers.
  • Resume Preparation- assistance in preparing and evaluating resumes is available at the Center, including computers and printers on which the resumes can be formatted and printed for qualifying job applicants.
  • Cooperative Education Classes- are held in the Center to help students who are enrolled in a minimum of seven units by offering college credit for paid work experience in their major field. The classes which accompany the work experience focus on the job skills needed to obtain, keep and advance employment.
  • Job Preparation- for eligible youth and those recently out of high school. The Center provides youth with school-to-career training in programs supported by special funds. The funding of various summer programs offers pre-employment skills in job search, interviewing, resume preparation, and personal appearance as well as job maturity skills like promptness attendance, telephone etiquette, interpersonal skills, and personal integrity.
  • On-Site Out Placement Service Assistance- is available to companies releasing numbers of employees.
  • The Business Computing Workshop- offers training in the Windows versions of Microsoft OfficePro, particularly MSWord and MSExcel. The open entry/open exit workshop focuses on the skills need by each individual. Many public training programs purchase this type of training programs purchase this type of training for their clients. The fee is $7.00 per hour for 10 or more hours.
  • Referrals- to courses and programs that will prepare students for better paying jobs are routinely available at the Center.
  • Community Outreach for Safety & Jobs. The College has begun an outreach program to those in the community who need ESL training to improve employment, obtain citizenship and insure a safe environment for themselves and their families.
  • GAIN- Greater Avenues for Independence offers basic skills, GED, pre-job training and TANF services at the Center.
  • Foster Children- who are nearing emancipation receive training to prepare them for independence, future employment and continuing education.
  • Foster Parent Training- is provided to prepare those who are willing to make room in their lives for children without home in order to insure that both the foster children and the foster parents achieve the appropriate benefits from the experience.
  • KEPS – Enables Kinship families to access information, resource, and people. KEPS helps relative caregivers strengthen and maintain family ties.
    KEPS- Promotes safe, stable and nurturing homes.
    KEPS provides educational information, advocacy and empowerment training. KEPS assists in developing a “family plan” for legal permanency
    KEPS- Is facilitated with representatives from the college, from the relative caregiver community, and from DCFS to see the “whole picture”.

  • Concerned about the children placed in your care including their birth parents
  • Stressed about parenting the second time around
  • Looking for resources and services to support your role as a caregiver
  • Carrying hopes and dreams for children placed in your care and their birth parents
