Meeting called to order at 2:05 p.m.
I. Approval of Agenda
N. Malone called the meeting to order in A. Patterson and D. Tull’s absence. The agenda was approved with the items for the VP’s Report and DSPS Technical Review report being tabled to a later meeting in light of the absences.
II. Approval of Minutes
Minutes from the April 15 meeting were accepted as presented.
III. External Scan
Dr. Richards and Dr. Humphreys presented the April 2009 external scan addressing the economic, demographic and technological trends for 2008-2018. They noted that unit plans/cluster plans are due to CPC mid-June. Points of interest:
- Rising unemployment is associated with rising enrollment; high demand for classes is expected through fall 2010.
- Our service area is projected to grow by 4%. This is down 2% from a year ago, and less than the state projected growth of 7%.
- Our service area population is aging, but the age of our students isn’t.
- The percentage of Hispanics and Asians will increase, while the percentage of white and African-Americans will decrease.
- At least 75% or our students use computers for school work. They rely upon technology in their lives.
- LAUSD has a plan for integrating technology and e-learning into their operations.
There was a review of competing colleges in the surrounding area, noting the abundance of pay colleges. Discussion followed on the number of online enrollments and how to increase this potential market.
Next meeting: June 10, SSA 205
Meeting adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
