Re: Senate Executive Meeting, 5/5/09
The Senate Executive Committee met on May 5, 2009 and dispatched the items on its agenda, thusly:
Graduation Egress and Reception
The Senate Executive Committee (SEC) recommends that a reception be held at Seahawk Center after graduation. Since both faculty and students have to return gowns after the ceremony, this seemed like the appropriate time and place. Egress should proceed as last year.
Graduation Marshals
The SEC recommends to the Senate that Susan McMurray and Mark Wood, as the most recent past Senate Presidents be marshals for graduation.
Mailroom Staff Recommendation
The SEC recommends that the Senate appoint an ad hoc committee of three persons to assess the needs for staffing the mailroom and clerical services. The report should be given back to the Senate before the end of the current academic year or as soon as possible. This is a follow-up to the Senate resolution asking for adequate support for faculty in these two areas.
Summer Schedule and Maximum Number of Student Enrollment Hours
The question has arisen as to Harbor College’s policy regarding limits on the number of hours a student may enroll in for summer school. Inquiry will be made as to District policy, if there is one, and inquiry has already been made to Vice President Luis Rosas about Division Council discussion about this concern.
Faculty Appointments to the Foundation
As a member of the Foundation, Jim Stanbery agreed to explore a Senate role in suggesting faculty members for the Harbor Foundation for the President to consider when naming faculty to the Board.
Faculty Advisor Supervision of Student Activities
Several faculty members have brought the question of who is supervising the student clubs when they hold activities in the quad or on campus. I, as President, suggested that a letter of inquiry be sent to the Dean of Student Affairs to ask what, if anything, the Senate might do to aid in making sure the students have the proper supervision for their campus activities. This will be a consent item on the Senate agenda.
