Executive Summary
Executive Summary,
Harbor College Academic Senate
Regular Meeting,
1:00, Thursday, December 4, 2008
Administrative Report
Dr. Spink expects that we will be moving into the new buildings early in the spring semester but procedural concerns may still delay this. Faculty will not have to occupy new offices until phone and computer capabilities are fully operative, but faculty will have all office files not required for actual teaching ready for transfer into the new buildings during winter break even if the new buildings are not ready for occupancy until after the spring semester has begun. Move dates should be confirmed by December 16.
It appears that the new state budget will bring proposed community college cuts more into balance with those proposed for the other public education sectors in California. Even so the resulting budget may require an additional $1 million in cuts here at Harbor.
Later in the meeting Ms. Tomlinson clarified the phone message mail box clearing policy and will address expressed concerns.
ASO Report
The Prop. S special election potentially increasing the ASO fee by $3 to benefit athletics is scheduled for December 9 and 10. Ms. Richards requested input on arranging faculty volunteers for a spring tutoring round table.
Consent Items
Senate Printer
Unanimous consent to authorize the President and Treasurer to order a color printer and cartridges for the new Senate office in an amount not to exceed $500.
ITEMS/MOTIONS FOR ACTION DECEMBER 4
Diversity Fund Proposal
Unanimous consent that control of the Diversity Fund should be turned over to the Staff Development Committee, with actions to require a sign-off by the compliance officer.
ITEMS/MOTIONS FOR FUTURE ACTION
Adjunct Eligibility for Ancillary Pay
Dr. Oakes and Mr. Glover updated the Senate on the current status of the concern, concluding that at this point it remains a Guild issue but there seems to be no further need to have it on the Senate agenda.
COMMENTS ON DISTRIBUTED REPORTS/NOTICES/COMMITTEE MINUTES
Vocational Education Committee
Mr. Young reported that in conformance with state policy the committee is now designated as the CTE (Career and Technical Education) Committee. College jurisdictional lines have been somewhat altered and additional monies are available, of which formal notice will be provided. Parking spaces in the new Northeast Academic Building lot will be quite limited. Unanimous consent to suspend the rules in order to adopt the following motion on that matter: that, inasmuch as that lot was originally designated for handicapped parking, that restriction should be reaffirmed.
