Harbor College Academic Senate
Regular Meeting,
1:00, Thursday, March 19, 2009
Call to order and approval of agenda
The meeting was called to order at 1:12, and the agenda adopted with the adjustments shown below.
Treasurer's Report
Ms. J. Smith urged speedy action on spring plenary reimbursement requests so the available balance remaining in the college Senate account can be established for necessary supply expenditures.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the March 5, 2009, meeting were approved as previously e-mailed with two typographical corrections.
Administrative Report
Dr. Spink ccommented briefly on the budget situation, noting that our position remains unchanged, assuming that the essential premeses of the state budget agreement hold, including voter approval of the package of ballot propositions included in that agreement. She also noted that these assumptions are rather large ones.
Some discussion resulted from the questioning by Ms. McMurray of the prospective filling by lateral transfer of a position on our FHPC list.
Dr. Tomlinson introduced the four full-time day custodians, emphasizing that they constitute the whole day custodial force for the entire campus, and urging all faculty to enforce reasonable limits on food and drink in the new buildings, in which maintenance problems are already appearing. Ms. J. Smith suggested a Senate policy for enforcing food and drink limits and expressed the Senate's appreciation to the custodial staff for their conscientious and effective service.
ITEMS/MOTIONS FOR ACTION MARCH 19
Speech Department Reorganization
M/S/C (Campbell/Glover; 8/0/2) to adopt the motion as noticed [see addendum]. Ms. J. Smith pointed out that adoption of the motion in its present form would express the Senate's hope as to the outcome of the "duly established process"once the process is set in motion, but would not decide that outcome.
Ms. Watkins assured the Senate that her committee will determine whether the document defining the process distributed at today's meeting is properly in force, and if it is not, will properly update the document.
ITEMS/MOTIONS FOR FUTURE ACTION
Senate Elections
At the suggestion of Ms. Campbell, Ms. J. Smith notified the Senate that an official call for nominations in the upcoming Senate elections will soon be issued.
