Executive Summary,
Harbor College Academic Senate
Regular Meeting,
1:00, Thursday, March 4, 2010
PUBLIC COMMENT
ASCCC Rostrum
Ms. McMurray drew the Senate's attention to an article by Pam Watkins in this month's issue on new approaches to dealing with basic skills.
Administration Report
Dr. Humphreys reminded senators of the opening of the Teaching Learning Center, with open houses from 1-3 and 5-7 Friday, March 15.
ITEMS FOR FUTURE ACTION
College Planning Policy and Procedures Manual
Mr. Stanbery briefed the Senate on the proposed revisions in the manual and timetable for planning-related actions this semester as distributed.
Provisional Equivalency Requirements
Ms. Watkins referred senators to the relevant page in the meeting packet and summarized the issue now being considered by the District Academic Senate as to whether provisional equivalency requirements are unenforceable and provisional equivalency should therefore be abolished. The sense of the meeting was that effective enforcement is possible and should be attained.
Student Sustainability Workshop
Mr. Munasinghe introduced seven guests here to brief the Senate on the workshop scheduled for Harbor College this spring. The workshop consists of eight meetings, the first to be held March 17 in Sci210 from 1:30 to 3:00, and all instructors are being asked to consider providing extra credit to students for participating.
Summer School
There was considerable discussion as to the relative effectiveness of summer classes and the appropriate process for deciding whether or not summer sessions should be scheduled. The sense of the meeting was that this is an academic as well as a budgetary issue, senates should be discussing it, and decisions on it should be reached through established governance and planning structures and procedures.
Associate in Liberal Arts Degree
Ms.J. Smith summarized the proposal in the meeting packet, which is likely to be on the agenda of this month's ASCCC. The sense of the meeting was that the effect would be to eviscerate our ability to offer lower division courses.
