APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes for the meeting of February 17, 2009 were adopted as adjusted.
Ms. Giovanni commented on the impact of the cancellation of summer school on working students, noting that she has been a student for several years at our campus and wants to be able to work in summer, but without a one unit class which is a District Requirement she will be unable to get her Federal Work Study money. Mr. Barakat suggested, as a possible solution for her and others similarly affected, that she take a 1-unit Pre-season conditioning class in order to fulfill the requirement. It was noted that Veterans need to have 7 units to get benefits.
Mr. Rosas announced that there will be no Online Classes this summer. The most we could offer for summer school is 50 classes.
Steven Robledo the ex-President of the ASO appraised the committee of a possible violation of open meeting requirements earlier that day, leading to a lengthy discussion, including the question of what forum would be most appropriate for raising such issues.
Jim Stanbery thanked everyone who is on the working team that is reviewing our planning-related documents. He presented proposed changes in sections 1 and 2, the lexicon, flowchart and timeline, of the current Planning Manual, along with a 3-page commentary on planning definitions which are related and clear.
Unanimous consent to charge the Accreditation Standard Teams now in place with following through on the accreditation planning agenda items previously assigned to this committee, with each team responsible for the items ascribed to its area/
Dave Humphreys and Jim Stanbery are continuing to represent the college on the District Online Program Review Task Force, which may have a useable template in place for the fall semester. Committee members were urged to review the District Planning Committee Minutes of Dec 11, Jan 29 and Feb 10 distributed at today’s meeting and note concerns they might have about the progress of the work.
John Clerx and Gary Colombo will be leaving their district positions. Dave Humphreys is working with Lora Lane to set up the Assessment Learning Outcomes. Bob Richards is working with e-Portfolios and the Pathway Program.
June Smith announced that she will be celebrating her 75th birthday at Boardwalk Café around 3:30 p.m. and faculty and staff were invited.
Dave Humphreys announced that on March 15 and 16 from 1-3p.m. and 5-7 p.m. there will be an Open House in the Teaching and Learning Center. This is an opportunity to see the space and meet part-time faculty who will be Staffing the place. It will be a good place for teachers to come together and get information on Technology and Basic Skills, and send out information into the community by way of emails, blogs etc. He would like to see the TLC become the life of the Campus.
Susan McMurray announced The Business/Education/Arts Committee is hosting a Celebrating Women 2010 luncheon to commemorate Women’s History Month. The event will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Crowne Plaza Los Angeles Harbor Hotel, where June Smith will be honored for her contributions to the community.
The new user friendly Electronic Curriculum Development (ECD) was also discussed, The Program will make it easy to import new curriculum and existing course outlines can be input in Word Documents.
