The minutes of the meeting for November 7, 2007 were approved as presented.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Larry Johnston may leave Harbor to take a position at Santa Ana College as Athletic Director/Associate Dean.
Dan Sanchez, Administration of Justice instructor, is recovering well from a recent illness.
INSTRUCTION/CONSTRUCTION ISSUES
Bill Englert has reported that the fire alarm system is now working and will be tested periodically.
Nabeel Barakat voiced his concern that there are not any nets in the batting cages at the softball field. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed as
soon as possible. Brad Young stated that this issue will be discussed at the next Work Environment Committee meeting.
Luis Rosas announced that the college is being told to prepare to move into the Northeast Academic Building in August. It has been recommended that the Fall 2008 Schedule of Classes be printed with existing room locations and if the building is finished by the start of the semester, room change notifications can be posted.
The committee agreed with this recommendation.
ACCREDITATION SLO REPORT – UPDATE
Mr. Rosas reported that the District recommendations portion has been written and forwarded to Jim Stanbery, June Smith and Beverly Shue for their review.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Mr. Rosas reported that he had two visitors from C-CAP, which is the Culinary Arts Program of the L.A. Unified School District. They are trying to develop some culinary programs in the area and asked to tour the facilities at Harbor to get a first-hand look at
how our students perform. Harbor’s Culinary program may become a hub for training in the area.
ACADEMIC SENATE REPORTS
Basic Skills – June Smith reported that the Senate passed a motion recently to move forward with forming a basic skills committee. Issues such as the composition of the committee and what the reporting process will look like still need to be worked out.
It was also noted that the preparation that will go into developing a program at Harbor similar to the one at Chaffey College is extremely important because it involves much more than just the areas of Math and English.
Curriculum – Lauren McKenzie reported that he has been sending out
reports, via e-mail, related to curriculum issues. The latest one dealt with
Title V changes; specifically, changes that affect the
A.A. –Liberal Arts Degree. A degree will be considered non-compliant if it does
not have an area of focus or major emphasis. As we move toward making degrees compliant,
which means they have to have a major, the wording should be such that the major
needs to be specified, not just a selection of courses under a specific section of general
education. The selection of courses listed must be backed up
by a specific rationale. The degree generally should support the student preparation towards a specific goal and not just the general goal of transferring. Mr. McKenzie went on to say that there are some specified degrees already in the works and the task then becomes to go about developing degrees for different disciplines. The District Curriculum Committee is in the process of creating templates that will work for everyone.
FLEX – The next FLEX meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27, at 3:30
p.m. in T 123.
SAPPC – June Smith opened up discussion related to the composition of the
Vice President of Student Services evaluation committee
CPC/CPC COMMITTEE REPORTS
CPC – The next meeting of the CPC will be held on Monday, November 26, at 1:30 p.m.
Budget – Lauren McKenzie reported that the District Budget Committee met recently where it was announced that because state revenues are falling behind, the college should prepare for cutbacks if not mid-year, then definitely in 2008.
Staff Development – Mark Wood announced that the next meeting will focus on the Winter session.
STUDENT SERVICES
REPORT
Joy Fisher reported that students are already registering for the Winter session and EOPS students will soon start registration for spring.
