SP101, ASSIGNMENT  # 4 REQUIREMENTS: 

 

1a. Type of speech:  Persuasive:  Using Problem-Solution strategy only. Presentation needs to demonstrate your understanding and use of the purposes of persuasive speaking and the three persuasive proofs-ethos, logos and pathos.

 

1b) Your Proposition which you seek to argue is due prior to or at the start of class on the week of 11/16/2009. It needs to demonstrate what a proposition must have in order to work successfully.-see Syllabus Calendar.

 

2. Time Limit Requirement:  8-10 minutes

 

3.  Professional Business Attire Only

 

4.  You must create and present your proposition/argument on a public issue that is controversial today. You are passionate, enthusiastic about your point of view as you influence change in your listeners. You should keep in mind that the topics that will be most interesting to your audience give information and concepts that are new, unique, useful and relevant. 

 

5.   You will need to search for and use in your speech at least 5-6 sources of supporting oral citations in your presentation. Only 2-3 can be from internet- only sources.

 

6. A bibliography with at least 10 relevant supporting sources /evidence must be included as part of your speech preparation outline. Also, you must turn in proof of a supporting materials search.  Your name and the date you completed the search should be in the upper right hand corner of each page.  These should be stapled or paper clipped if they contain more than one page and attached to speech outline. 

 

7. Use the problem-solution outlines in your textbook as guide for assignment # 4  format for the typed preparation outline you will turn in on your speaking day.  Be sure to note the following:  Your speech presentation and speech outline must include a specific Proposition. The introduction should consist of an attention step and clarification step and should be written out.  The conclusion should summarize the main ideas and should be written out.  The body of the speech should be outlined with full sentences at all Roman numerals and capital letters.  Key words and sentence fragments should be used below this level.  You should have no less than two and probably not more than three main ideas in the body of the speech.   Each Main idea /claim must be supported with not less than one oral citation in the form of examples, statistics, and testimony. Take a good look at the sample outlines provided in text, handouts and speech #3. Lastly, transitions should be written out between main ideas and should summarize the previous point as well as strive to preview the next main idea. Again, each one of the main idea you have developed should be supported by at least one oral citation.
