Useful
OWL (information on MLA formatting from Purdue U)
Coooool!
The Storm (this takes a while to load, but give it a chance)
Yesterland (Disneyland in memory)
The following links were provided by Ann Warren
Travel
Arthur Frommer's Outspoken Encyclopedia of Travel. (this site talks travel to real people, giving bargain prices and names and addresses of great hotels and restaurants. It also has travel tips and reviews)
Pamela Lanier's Travel Guides Online. (info on everything from bed-and-breakfasts to package deals)
Atevo Travel. (locate accomodations, make plane or cruise reservations, get maps, send e-postcards, and more)
Time Out Worldwide City Guides. (in case the other sites don't get you where you want to go, click on the city you're going to, and this site will tell you where to stay, where to eat, how to get around, and what's going on in the city for the next two weeks)
Maps On Us. (tell them where you're starting and where you want to go, and they'll map out a route for you, including information on mileage and drive time...excellent!)
Real Estate
Listinglink. (a good site if you're nosy and want to know how much your neighbor's house is listed for, too.)
Money
The Motley Fool (won't promise you riches, but it will give you information on just about any aspect of the economic world: stock quotes, portfolio tips, investment strategies. And if you're brand new at investing, they'll give you lessons)
Health
The Patient's Guide to Healthcare Information on the Internet. (with links to information databases, a glossary, and support group)
Learn CPR Online (not a substitute for taking a live CPR class, but it can show you what to do in case an emergency happens before you get around to it)
Animal Rescue
There are hundreds of animal rescue sites; these will link you to the best of them, and tell you where to look for more help. If you've rescued a dog or cat, or--even better--you'd like to rescue an animal, check out these sites:
Sam's Dog Rescue Hot Links Page
Samoyed Rescue
Australian Shepherd Breed Rescue Page
Australian Shepherd Rescue Photo Page
S.A.B.R.E. Cat Rescue Links
Save Our Critters Cat Rescue
Food and Drink
Thrive Alive's Recipe Finder (a lifesaver, especially if you have no time but want to eat healthy food anyway; their recipes are realistic, too; hardly ever do you have to hike to Tibet for that one perfect spice)
If you need more recipes, try
The Uneducated Palette: Wine for the Rest of Us (helps those of us who like wine, but don't know anything about it)
The Zagat Restaurant Survey (covers everything from posh to burgers)
Gardening
Gardening.com (problem solvers, a plant encyclopedia, a landscape designer, and links to other gardening sitesp--with lots of pictures)
Car Buying
Edmund's Consumer Information Experts (informative review...and it's often funny)
The Intellichoice Car Center ( the feature I liked the most was "WindowSticker," which lets you enter the make and model you want to buy, list all the options you want, and get a price,,,and no, Dad, I don't want to hear how little you paid for your first car!)
Science
Science a GoGo (everything from dinosaur teeth to global warming to why animals cheat on their mates)
Miscellaneous Info and Reference
My Virtual Reference Desk (Bob Drudge has put together a brilliant site here, with links to just about every information source you could ask for: newspapers, reference works, magazines, wire services, and much, much more than I could ever list here; this one's a lulu!)
Policy.com (find out all you ever wanted to know about politics and political issues; more important, there are links to tons of public or private interest groups, and you can find your congressperson's or senator's home page and e-mail)
Votenet. (find out who your congresspeople are, and then find out how they've been voting on the issues you care about)
The Biographical Dictionary (don't miss the "Master Biographer Challenge" quiz game)
Trivia
Didja Know?. (loads of trivia, but more fun is the front page; it starts you off with a list of "facts"; only one of which is true)
Music and Entertainment
imdb.com (information on movies....lots of information on movies)
Musicstation (is like Music News Central)
Honkworm International (produces animated short features for corporate customers. Even if you don't have a corporation, you should check out their examples--they're hysterical)
Soaps?
CelebrityEmail.com. (e-mail addresses for movie and t.v. stars, sports stars, politicians, movie and t.v. producers, and links to other celebrity gossip and info sites)
Mysteries.com ( info on the mystery shows on t.v. each day, but more intriguing is its "Mystery of the Day"--a short mystery you can solve yourself)
The Random Monty Python Skit Server ('nuff said)
Nathan Mates' Humor Archive (sample categories: Babylon 5 Humor, College Humor, Computer Humor, Fake Tests, and Pet Humor; if you need a joke, it's here)
The Devil's Dictionary (a toss-up whether to list this in Entertainment or Reference, but the definitions are so funny, I had to put it in with the jokes. An example: "HAPPINESS, n. An agreeable sensation arising from contemplating the misery of another." And "VOTE, n. The instrument and symbol of a freeman's power to make a fool of himself and a wreck of his country")
