Handouts
4/29/11
Exam 3 on May 3rd. It will cover lectures 7-9, Transcription/Translation, Natural Selection, Speciation, and Evolution. We will devote about an hr to this and then I'll finish off the animal diversity lecture (invertebrates).
Here are the handouts. I appologize for posting the HW so late. However, if you have turned in every HW assignment thus far, then the next 3 HW assignments are optional.
4/22/11
Hi Folks. I hope everyone had a good spring break. There are no new handouts for tues' class. The quiz will focus on lecture 9, speciation and macroevolution. Then I'll finish lecture 10 on animal diversity (chordates).
The rest of the time will be devoted towards reviewing for Exam 3. The format will be more like a question/answer session rather a formal presentation. Please start studying now and bring questions to the review. Otherwise it'll be a very short review.
Remember, the exam has been moved to 5/3.
4/9/11
There is only one handout for this week. I'm going to finish lecture 9 on speciation and macroevolution and then I'm going to start lecture 10 on animal diversity and chordates.
We're going to shift everything by one class session b/c I wasn't able to start lecture 9 last week. The new schedule is as follows:
4/12 - Lec 9 & 10
4/19 - Spring Break
4/26 - Finish Lec 10 and Review for Exam 3
5/3 - Exam 3(on lec 7-9)
- finish with Animal Diversity Invertebrates
Do the HW that I posted last week on animals. That should get you up to date for this week. Hint on the phylogenetic tree problem -> an organism can't be listed on the tree in more than one place.
4/1/11
Here are the handouts for the next class meeting. People are still turning in the wrong homework. Please make sure you double check the due date on the homework assignment before you start working on it.
Bring last week's lecture handout to class this week. I'm going to finish Natural Selection and Evolution. Then I'll spend the rest of the time on speciation and macroevolution. You'll also be getting back your graded exams.
3/26/11
Exam 2 is scheduled for this tues. We'll spend about an hr on this and then I'll give the first half of the natural selection lecture (handout below). I'll stop early and maybe we can review transcription and translation too.
We're coming on week 8 and the class is starting to thin out. As a reminder, the class policy states that you will be automatically dropped from the course if you miss two classes.
I would also like to remind folks that only the top 9 homework assignments count towards your grade. This may factor in if you need more time to study for the exams.
3/18/11
Here are the handouts for the next class. The lecture handout on molecular genetics is complete. There are no missing texts or figs b/c this is probably the most difficult topic in the course.
As a general reminder, exam 2 will be on 3/29 and will cover lectures 4-6, Photosynthesis/Respiration, Cell Division, and Mendelian Genetics. In my opinion, this will be the most difficult exam for this course. The material is very dense and there are a lot of complicated concepts. Please don't wait until the last minute to study. I strongly advise students to study in pairs or groups.
3/11/11
Here are the handouts for the next class. The topic will be on mendelian genetics. I will end the lecture a little early so that we can go over your exams from last week.
You should also be preparing for the next exam on 3/29. It will cover lectures 4-6, photosynthesis and respiration, cell division, and mendelian genetics.
3/4/11
Here are the handouts for next tues class. Some people are still turning in the wrong homework. The due dates are clearly marked on top of each homework assignment. It is your responsibility to read the directions.
Please remember that the first exam will be given next week (3/8). It will cover material from lectures 1-3. I would also like to remind you that only the top 9 HW scores will count toward your grade. Therefore, some of the HW assignments are "optional" if you're getting full credit on your assignments. You may want to consider this when preparing for the exam.
Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone again about the attendance policy. Two absences will automatically get you dropped from the class. We are only in week 4 and quite a few people have already missed 1 lecture. You have been warned.
2/25/11
Here are the handouts for next tues. Please make sure you note the due date for the homework. As always, the due dates are always clearly marked at the top of the handout.
Please arrive on time. Students arriving during the quizzes are being marked late and HW that is not turned in at the beginning will be marked late as well. Please review the syllabus for details on the bio 3 attendance policy and the college catalog for the schools attendance policy.
2/18/11
Here are the handouts for tues 2/22.
2/16/11
It is up to the student to make sure that they are officially enrolled in the course. Last night, 3 people signed the attendance sheet who are not on the official roster. Their last names are Barr, Colin, and Monroe.
This may have occurred if they did not show up to lab this week or their add slips have not processes yet. Make sure you go to your assigned lab. Otherwise, you might get dropped from the course.
2/11/11
Here is the lecture handout for next tues' class. Note that not all of the text is complete. You still need to pay attention during lecture and write notes. I've also removed the figures from the textbook. You are expected to follow the lectures using your text.
The second document is the homework assignment for next week. The due date for each homework assignment is clearly printed on each handout. Please don't confuse these dates.
2/10/11
Dr. Escandon has notified me that she posted the bio 3 lab assignments today. The two pm labs are completely full. There may be one or two spaces left in the tues 8am lab if you need to switch or add this course. Remember, you MUST be in one of the labs to be enrolled in bio 3 or you will be dropped.
2/8/11
Welcome to Biology 3. I will use this website to make weekly announcements and post documents such as lecture handouts and homework assignments. You need to have acrobat reader to view these documents.
I covered the scientific method during the first class meeting. Please do the homework on the chemistry of life (ch 2). It will be due at the beginning of class next tues. We will also have a quiz at the beginning of class on the scientific method. Study your lecture notes for this.
As a reminder, the new time for bio 3 is tues at 7:15pm-10:05pm. Please arrange your schedule accordingly. As per according to the college's strict attendance policy, you will automatically be dropped from the course if you miss 2 classes (includes the first day, see college catalog for more details). If you arrive late 3 times, this will count as 1 missed class.
I will post an announcement on this website once I find when the lab assignments have been posted. E-mail me should you have any questions.
