HARBOR MEN'S SOCCER OPTIMISTIC ABOUT 2008
Los Angeles Harbor College's men's soccer team will have a very new look
on the field and on the sidelines with all new assistant coaches, which will
include long-time South Bay coach Jim Lillie. Lillie has led top high school
and club teams to many championships. The staff includes Joselius Palomares
(former assistant men's coach at Loyola Marymount and director of coaching at
Pacifica Coast Soccer Club), Richard Delgado (head coach of Forza Inter-Soccer
Club, coach at Banning High), along with two of the top goalkeepers from the
area: Steve Merriwether (Redondo High and Harbor College) and Javier
Barragan (Cal State Dominguez Hills, signed with Chivas USA in 2005).
Harbor has many promising newcomers for the 2008 season with a few two and
four-year transfers.
The Seahawks will have a new look, but will not be inexperienced with returning players Edson Rivera (Lynwood), Alex Guerrero (Peninsula), Miguel Sanchez (Inglewood), Dennis Bravo (Carson), Fernando Navarrete (Banning) and Victor Galacia (Animo Leadership). Key transfers include Kenny Garay (Los Angeles High), David Hernandez (Westchester), Tiburcio Casillas (Animo Leadership), Francisco Ruelas, Marco Caballero (Banning), Johnny Aleman (Animo Leadership) and Roberto Sanchez (University). A few of the top newcomers from the South Bay are Brenny Ortega (Torrance), Armando Gallegos, Saul Veliz, Travis Gehrke (all three previously mentioned from Gardena), Ricky Ramirez (Salesian), Damian Hildalgo, Francisco Aguirre (previous two from Animo Leadership), Bryan Escareno (Venice), Brandon Alvarez (Inglewood), Jose Casillas (Narbonne), Alberto Renteria (Paramount), Rodolfo Juaregui (Paramount), Alex Chavez (Manual Arts), Steve Fleytas, Edder Lemus, Ralph Delgado, Oscar Arias, Luis Rosales, Joel Martinez, David Romero, Guillermo Gracia and Freddy Ortiz (previous eight mentioned from Banning). Two international players from Scotland (Gavin Sims and Mark Murry) will also contribute.
Coach Barlow said he will have a difficult time pairing down to a workable number for the upcoming season. "We are fortunate to have so many talented athletes trying out for
the squad," he said. "It's going to be a battle at the goalkeeper's spot, having seven keepers out for the team. We are hoping that we can get back on track and get back into the playoffs this season and if we get the necessary discipline, commitment and work ethic, I think this will be achieved."
