                          LOS ANGELES HARBOR COLLEGE
                                               SEAHAWKS

                                               Head Coach

                                          Tony Carter-Loza

  Coach Carter-Loza

Head Coach Tony Carter-Loza enters his 11th season at the helm of  the Seahawks program and his 31st season as a basketball coach on three different levels. Coach Carter-Loza has coached previously at Cerritos Community College, South Gate High school, Bishop Montgomery High School, Compton High School, Torrance High School and two stints as assistant coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

During his tenure year at Harbor, Coach Carter-Loza has prided himself on building a program strictly on local area talent. This philosophy, along with a focus on academics, has allowed the Harbor Basketball program to continually move players on to the next level. Coach Carter-Loza feels “this program is built on area talent affording me the opportunity to mentor and develop great young men. Our team motto is family and each player who plays at Harbor College is treated with dignity and respect, allowing the program to maintain a positive atmosphere.”

Prior to his tenure at Harbor, Coach Carter-Loza was an assistant coach at Cerritos College from 1999-2001. During his two seasons at Cerritos, the Falcons were able to win a league title and advance to the state playoffs. His experience at Cerritos under Coach Gary Cain, a former Head Basketball Coach at Harbor College, helped lead him into eventually becoming the Head Basketball Coach at Harbor College, as he led the Seahawks to their greatest season in program history last year with an South Coast Conference South Division title and an Elite-Eight appearance in the 2011 Southern California Regionals.

From 1993-1999, Coach Carter-Loza was the head basketball coach at South Gate High School. During his time at South Gate, his teams won three league titles and participated in the City Section playoffs four times. Under his guidance at South Gate, former player and All-City selection Ronald Johnson received a scholarship to Cal State Los Angeles, where he became a four-year All-Conference selection, two-time Division II All-American and the leading scorer in the history of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Coach Carter-Loza worked as an assistant coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills under legendary coach Dave Yanai from 1983-1986 and again from 1990-1992. During his time, Coach Carter-Loza was responsible for player development, on-floor coaching and recruiting, all while eventually helping lead the Toros to the 1986 CCAA league title and NCAA playoff berth.

From 1979-1988, Coach Carter-Loza worked as a head coach at Bishop Montgomery High School, Compton High School and an assistant at Torrance High School.

Coach Carter-Loza earned his Master’s Degree in Education with Administrative credentials from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1999. He lives in Downey with his wife Cecilia, son Joel and daughters Nicole and Emily.
